THE GUIJE: The mythological figure of the
guije.
Cuba fields constitute a propitious place for conservation and all
kinds of legend an oral transmission. Following the tradition of
African slaves, and like them, after having worked long hours,
peasants used to gather to enjoy stories, anecdotes, fables, myths
and legends that were among them. The lack of more sophisticated
entertainment like radio, television and cinema, these evenings
became an acclaimed distraction. In the meantime the stories
multiplied and thrived with new elements that came from the
imagination of their narrators.
Among the most often mentioned legendary subjects in these
gatherings was the guije be fantastic, which are believed to living
in rivers and ponds of Savannas. However, this was not the only
extraordinary resident of such places. There were other narrations
which concerned and even described a second character called del
jigüe. Due to the similarity of their names and that inhabited the
same physical space, both figures were gradually merging into a
single.
